Dick and Erma Albert spent a quiet week trying to recover from the colds and flu that are going around. They did some shopping around Buffalo, but stayed pretty much at home.
Alvin and Marlee Cordell went out to Gerald and Becky Burghduff’s on New Year’s Eve, and visited with other friends that had gathered there. It was 15 below zero early the next morning. On Wednesday, trucks hauled calves from Alvin’s to Belle Fourche for the sale. Alvin and Marlee went down to Belle Fourche and stayed that night, so they could go to the sale on Thursday. On Sunday, they went to church at the Methodist Church in Camp Crook, and then had lunch and a good visit with Justin and Rexene Till at the Over The Edge. The wind had come up strong in the night, and cut some of the snow, so that there was some bare ground showing on a calm Sunday morning.
Justin, Marion and Kyra Kerr went to Bowman on Monday to get some groceries. Richard Grimes had been home for Christmas. Eva had gone up to the Billings airport to meet him before Christmas. On Sunday, Justin took him back to meet his flight to Portland, Oregon where he works with an architectural firm. The roads got bad on the way back. They had to stop in Miles City, and they got iced-in there. They spent the night there, and came home on New Year’s Eve.
Pete Anderson had a fish fry this week, and invited Wacey and Heather Kornemann, and Ian and Jenna Flatgard.
Donna Lewis went to Baker on Thursday. Since there was no bowling that day, she had her car worked on, and came home on Friday. In the middle of the night, the wind came up and blew strong, but Sunday morning was calm and nice. Donna delivered one birthday cake on the 29th, but will keep busy making many more, with all the family birthdays that are in January.
Dorothy Padden enjoyed her New Year’s Day watching the Rose Bowl and three football games. It was her day off. On Friday, she and Bryce went to Ekalaka to get some license plates. Then on Saturday, she and Bryce and Dawn went back to Ekalaka for the boys’ and girls’ basketball games. There saw four games; two girls’ games and two boys’ games. Terry had come to Ekalaka, but the home team won all the games.
Dawn Padden and Nita Loken had spent last Sunday at their sister, Michelle Tooke’s where they worked on the house. Things kept coming up that made the work longer, so they went back on Wednesday and Thursday. This Sunday, they got all the flooring down and the walls and trim done. Mac, the kids, and some friends had been out working bulls. When they came to sit on the porch, the friends wanted the sisters to do some carpentry for them, too, but the offer was directly refused. They were glad to get this job done. Bryce had gone to Belle Fourche on Thursday to the sale barn. On Saturday, Bryce, Dawn and Dorothy went to the basketball games in Ekalaka, and the Ekalaka teams played very well using their entire bench throughout the game.
On New Year’s Eve, Toney Hannah first drove Ronda Cordell to Buffalo for physical therapy, and then on to Rapid City for an MRI. Roads were somewhat treacherous but slow and steady got them there. Rapid City seemed like a ghost town, but that made less traffic. The first restaurant they stopped at was closed, but McDonalds was open. Ronda was very glad to get back home. Luke, Jamie, Oren, Arlie and Konnor Basler went to the Black Hills on New Year’s Day. Cristen Westling met them in Sturgis, to get Konnor for the day, so Luke, Jamie, Oren and Arlie could meet Chad, Debby and Roudy Zolnoski at Terry Peak to go skiing. Oren, Arlie and Jamie were first-time skiers so they got some instruction. When Jamie wondered where Oren was, they finally spotted him headed to the top of the ski lift with Roudy. Roudy is a mastered skier but it was Oren''s first go-round, and there was a bit of concern for his getting off the slope. After Roudy had gotten back down, they finally spotted Oren coming down, too. He wasn't taking any chances, he was packing the skis, and walked all the way down. Cristen brought Konnor to Sturgis that evening, where they all ate together before heading home. Ronda went to physical therapy in Buffalo on Wednesday and had supper at the Over The Edge. Toney and Linda Hannah, and Luke's family joined Clint and Denise for supper that evening. Toney and Linda stopped to visit with Ronda. On Thursday, Justin Kerr and Diane Wear came to Ronda’s to help bangs vaccinated heifer calves. After lunch, Luke's family went to the Black Hills again. Oren, Arlie and Konnor went to Cristen’s for that day and overnight, while Luke and Jamie went to Deadwood to take in the town and spend the night there. Diane helped Ronda sort heifers and put eye patches on them on Friday. Then, Diane and Clint moved the herd to the Allan Corner. Chad Zolnoski came to join Clint in the Baker Coyote Calling Contest that was Friday night through Saturday. They placed 3rd with 40 teams calling. Luke and his family started back to Missouri on Saturday. Gene and Brayden Secrest stopped by after feeding for Clint. On Sunday, Chad helped fill cake buckets for Ronda before going home. Paula Richter stopped by and they had lunch together, Luke had gotten home that evening.
Charlie Odell saw that the temperature was at least ten below zero on New Year’s Day. He and Karen watched the Rose Parade, switching between two channels, but when they watched it again on the rural channel, the coverage was much better and the complete parade could be seen. They watched the Rose Bowl, and of course, Karen was a Buckeye fan. Her four children group texted with her during the game, and even Micki, who might have been cheering for the other side, had some buckeye candies made from peanut butter and chocolate. With Karen’s more modern phone, she can almost keep up with the texting, and get in a witty remark of her own once in a while. Charlie inspected cattle for Paddens on Wednesday, and for Capitol LLC on Thursday. He met with a surgeon in Spearfish to discuss his shoulder on Friday. Karen got more of the flooring done, but had done something to her heal, so didn’t quite get it completed until Saturday morning. Then she had to put her foot up and ice it. The four kids and Karen group texted again for the Cowboys and Seahawks game. This time Cody and Kellan had on their Cowboys clothes and Micki’s family had on their Seahawks clothes, but Micki had sent Carson a Seahawks shirt, so he opposed his dad and brother during the game. Grandma put on her Vaughnsville Vikings shirt, but was told they weren’t playing. Even as a ‘middle of the road’ fan, it was a good game. Karen’s foot was better on Sunday, but she did not want to attempt hobbling on the ice, so they had church at home. Then Charlie went to the Over The Edge and got Diane’s great Sunday special to bring home.
